Afterword
You may have been left a little breathless after reading the last words of If The Bed Falls In. This has been a relentless ride, and may well have been confusing at times. I am sorry for any pain caused, but I believe it is the necessary cost of a book that wants to do more than merely entertain.
In my opinion there are two writers of a novel. Firstly the author conceives of the story and spends months putting it down on paper. Then there are weeks of editing to make sure you are served the best version possible. The second writer (and just as creative and important as the author) is you. In your mind you imagine every detail; the look of each character, the tone of their voices and the smells and sounds of every scene. Without your creative input a novel is just ink on paper. Every fiction writer depends on the reader to transfer their ideas to the big screen of their minds.
The ending of a book is the biggest challenge for both writer and reader. If the story is to be perceived as ‘real’, every character must be left with a future; their existence must not end on the last page of the book.
And so it is with If The Bed Falls In. Joseph is left in mid-air finally understanding that Tom was the hallucination and he has made the greatest error of his life as he falls to a certain death. But rather than spoiling this literal cliff-hanger with a pedestrian wrapping up, you the reader are given your greatest challenge; to imagine what happens next.
I wish I could hear everyone’s mind as they read the last words. Hear your anguish, watch your imagination working things out, and see what you believe happens next as the characters career into their unwritten future.
It may please you to hear that if you want to know what my imagination has done with this troubled cast, book two of the series is available now. Furthermore, there is also a companion novella that fills in a lot of the background to the book you’ve just finished. If you are still feeling breathless, look at the following pages for details of the other books in the series and other novels by me.
All best wishes,
Paul

Blue Skies over Dark Days (An unreliable memoir)
These are true tales - well, mostly. In this first volume of autobiographical episodes, I have allowed a little artistic licence to hopefully turn some extraordinary events from my life into funny and often moving pieces.
